Bring the Full Tithe
In the prophetic book of Malachi, last book of the Old Testament, God commands the people not to neglect to bring their tithes and offerings into the Temple. These resources were used to feed the hungry, that is, to be a resource to the wider community, and to provide for the worship of God; exactly the purposes for which we are collecting money in our parish. Here’s what God promises:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord God of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. – Malachi 3:10
Rest assured; we do not serve a transactional God. God doesn’t have an account book to track exactly how much you give to the church so that it can be repaid to you with interest. Also, you can’t buy your way to heaven because God’s grace is as free as it is infinite. However, when we have our priorities straight as a community and as individuals, when we are generous for the right reasons, when we determine to invest in this place as a place of belonging, as a place which blesses our neighbors and glorifies God, we can be assured that God will bless and increase our efforts. That is a promise we can stand on.
