Worship

† On December 8, we will welcome our second St. Faith preacher, the Rev. Canon Betsy Ivey, the Canon for Growth and Support at the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania.

† Are you friendly?  We need you! Our greeter ministry is one of the key ministries of our church.  Greeters welcome visitors, make people comfortable, hand out service leaflets and take up offering.  They make sure the service runs smoothly. Starting in October, we will be organizing a monthly Greeters breakfast with the Rector, probably at a local restaurant.  If you’re interested in serving God in this way, talk to Jim Jervis or Fr. James.

† Morning Prayer is offered at 8:30AM on Sunday mornings and at 9:15AM Tuesdays through Fridays.  Anyone can pray the service privately using the Book of Common Prayer or one of a number of smartphone apps!  See the last section of the digital edition of the “Acts of the Apostles” for details.

Outreach

† Connect-by-Night begins tonight!  There are still some empty slots needed for lunch preparers!  See the sign-up sheet in the parish hall or online: bit.ly/2WbmPn3

† There are lots of opportunities to participate in Holy Apostles Outreach through our various programs:

      – Delivering items to a food pantry in Northeast Philadelphia

      – Meals at Darby Mission (3/17) or our annual holiday meal with the East Parkside Community Association (12/9). Other ideas are welcome. Please contact Joe Zorc (zorc@email.chop.edu) or see the sign-up sheet in the parish hall.

Children and Youth

† Nursery childcare is available during the 10:00AM Sunday service for children ages 3 and younger in the Godly Play Room.

† The Holy Apostles Choir School is off and running for the Fall of 2019.  If you have a potential student, apply today.  More information is available at holyapostlespa.org/choir-school/. Please forward this information to friends and neighbors who may be interested. Contact Deb Stambaugh if you have any questions.

† Christmas Pageant: December 15 during the 10AM service. Rehearsals will be during Sunday School (10AM) on Dec. 1, and Dec. 8. There will also be a rehearsal on Sat., Dec. 14 at 9AM. † We are getting ready to refresh the hallway outside the church offices including some new paint, new furniture, and eventually new flooring.  As a result we have been moving some things around. The Lost & Found box is now located in the church office.

Pancakes with Santa

Join us Saturday, December 7th for a special breakfast and a visit from Old Saint Nick. Doors open at 8AM and breakfast will be served until Santa departs at 11AM.

Crafts and other activities will also be provided.

Admission

$3 for ages 3-12
$5 for ages 13 and up
children under 3 are FREE

Proceeds go toward supporting the outreach ministries of Holy Apostles.

Outreach

Pancakes with Santa: Saturday, Dec. 1st, 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Breakfast free for children 5 years old and younger. Ages 6-14 are $4. Ages 15 and up are $7. Baked goods will be for sale. Bring your own camera for pictures with Santa!

† Volunteers are needed to help with “Pancakes with Santa” (see announcement above). Opportunities to help: kitchen, set-up, clean-up, arts and crafts table, and bake sale table. Donations of baked goods and Christmas items to be sold are appreciated. If you would like to help, please contact Drew Meiers, Judy Jervis, or place your name on the sign up list in the Parish Hall.

† The East Parkside Citizens Association is celebrating their annual holiday party and has invited us to celebrate with them once again this year on Monday, December 10th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. We will meet at the church at 5 p.m. to travel together, or you can come to Christ Community Baptist Church, 1224 N 41st St., Philadelphia PA 19104. We usually bring side dishes and will post a sign-up list in the Parish Hall. They are determining whom they will honor this year and will let us know how we can participate in that.

† The Connect by Night shelter program does not have a host for the month of December due to emergency repairs in one of their churches. After some careful consideration on the vestry, we have decided to offer to be their host for the last 2 weeks of the month over the holidays (December 16th-31st). They will use a combination of the Church and Parish Hall for accommodations during that time, and we will do our usual lunch preparation. We will post a sign-up list in the parish hall and online.

Children and Youth

† Sunday School: Children Preschool – 2nd grade and 3rd – 8th grade attend Sunday classes at 10:00 a.m., the same time as the church service starts; children join their parents in the church in time for communion. Classes are held on the 1st, 3rd, & 4th Sundays of the month. On 2nd Sundays children attend church with their parents, either the 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist service or the 5:30 p.m. Family Worship Service. When there is a 5th Sunday, children attend church with their parents, with some of the children taking part in leading the service.

† Confirmation Class: November 25 at 5 p.m.

† The Holy Apostles Choir School pilot program will start February 5, 2019. It is an after-school program on Tuesday and Thursdays. Students, grades 1 – 5 will receive homework assistance and then study music using the Royal School of Church Music, Voice for Life curriculum. If your student is interested in participating in the program, please return the attached application to drstambaugh@gmail.com.

The Choir School will accept only 20 students for the pilot semester. Placement preference will be given to members of the Church of the Holy Apostles. Turkey Trot: 5K Run or 1 Mile Walk 9:00 a.m. Thanksgiving, Nov. 22nd, to raise money for the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania . (Meet in front of St. Faith Church, Havertown.) The fee is $20 or $10 for participants under 12. This event is held each year in memory of Matt Smyth who passed away from Testicular Cancer at age 23 and to remind men to check themselves. Make your donations payable to Abramson Cancer Center and in the memo put “The Matt Smyth Fund”.

† Fall Reading: We finally received our copies of The Apostles’ Creed: A Guide to the Ancient Catechism by Ben Myers. Those of you who ordered a book, please pick them up. If you want, get started on reading it, and stay tuned as we figure out a time to discuss this wonderful book.

Worship

Welcome to Church of the Holy Apostles! This morning’s service is Holy Eucharist, Rite II, at 10:00 a.m..  Our Guest Celebrant is the Rev. Canon Shawn Wamsley. The Rev. James Stambaugh will serve as Deacon and Preacher.

Morning Prayer: This week, Tuesday through Friday in the church at 9:00 a.m.

Sunday, December 24th is both Advent IV (in the morning) and Christmas Eve (in the late afternoon and evening). There will be Holy Eucharist, Rite II, as usual at 10:00 a.m. (but without choir) on the 24th, observing Advent IV. Christmas Eve services are Holy Eucharist, Rite II, at both 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. There will be Holy Eucharist at 9:00 a.m. on Christmas Day, Monday, December 25th (without choir).

Children & Youth

Some of the artists we will listen to include Bob Dylan, Beyonce, Dave Matthews, Regina Spektor, and Oliver Mtukudzi.  James is open for other suggestions.

Outreach & Service

On Monday December 11th at 6pm the Holy Apostles will hold its annual holiday meal with the East Parkside Resident’s Association. The group will be celebrating members of their community who are cancer survivors.  We will be bringing side dishes and uncooked (frozen or defrosted) turkeys to distribute as gifts.  A sign-up sheet will be posted in the parish hall, and we can travel together from church leaving at 5:30 pm to the Christ Community Baptist Church, 1224 N 41st St , Philadelphia, PA 19104.  If anyone is interested in being part of their entertainment program, or if there are other questions, please contact Joe Zorc at zorc@email.chop.edu .

Ordination to the Priesthood On December 9 at 4:00 p.m., our deacon-in-charge, James Stambaugh will be ordained to the priesthood by the Rt. Rev. Daniel Gutiérrez.  The special service will take place here at Holy Apostles.  A reception will follow.  An important part of the service is for people to formally present James to the bishop.  James would like to invite any and all willing members of CHA to be his presenters for the service. See BCP, pp. 526-7 to see what this entails.  Look for a sign-up sheet on the table across from the parish office.

The parish office will be open this week on Tuesday, November 28th, and Thursday, November 30th.

Darby Mission Meal: Wyatt Delavan’s Boy Scout troop 300 is planning to serve an Italian-themed dinner for the Darby Mission on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Additional support in providing and making food would be greatly appreciated. Food dropped off in the church kitchen will be picked up by the Delevans this Sunday, Nov. 19. This Sunday marks the culmination of our annual Stewardship Season, Celebrating God’s Good Gifts.  As we complete this important time in the life of our parish and gather our pledge cards this morning, the vestry and the deacon-in-charge want to thank those who spoke of their stewardship journeys, David and Suzanne Lees for coordinating this year’s Stewardship season and brunch, and especially to all who are able to contribute time, talent, and treasure, in thanksgiving to God, for the work of the Church of the Holy Apostles.  Our Celebration Brunch will immediately follow this service.

Worship

This Sunday, Holy Eucharist, Rite II 10:00 a.m. Our guest celebrant is the Rev. Doris Rajagopal. The Rev. James Stambaugh will serve as deacon and preacher. Our guest organist is Robin Muse. This is Youth Sunday, and we thank all those children and teens who are serving in today’s service.

Morning Prayer: Tuesdays through Fridays in the church at 9:00 a.m.

Commemoration of the Faithful Departed Thursday, November 2nd at 6:00 p.m.

A special service of prayer including a procession to our columbarium where prayers will be said for all those interred there. The service also will include commemoration and prayers for all our loved ones who have passed.  If you have names of the departed you would like read aloud, please submit them to holyapostlespa@gmail.com or by hand/mail to the parish office before November 1st.

On November 5th we will have a baptism at Holy Apostles. Julie McLaughlin, daughter of Kate and Sean McLaughlin, will be baptized.  In the meantime, we will be praying for baby Julie and her family.

Evening Family Worship will take place on Sunday, November 12th at 5:30 p.m. An informal meal will follow the service.

Outreach & Service

After this Sunday’s service, Oct. 29th, there will be a brief meeting of those interested in Outreach to do some scheduling and organization for the rest of the year.  Topics will include Darby Mission meals and service projects, East Parkside Holiday Celebration (scheduled for Monday 12/11), and Connect by Night, as well as any other ideas from the church community. The Sunday School will once again be running a drive to collect Treats for Troops stationed overseas.  The collection will run through Veteran’s Day weekend, Sunday November 12th.  A list of needed items (Halloween candy, toiletries, sundries) is posted in the church hall or at this link: http://www.philatreatsfortroops.com/donate.

 Education

The Christian Year: The Strange and Wondrous Rhythms of the Church Calendar. Our first adult and older teen study group “mini-series” is swiftly approaching.  These exciting and interactive classes will be held on Wednesday Nov. 1st, 8th, and 15th at 6:30 p.m.  We will meet in our newly renovated and technologically advanced Memorial Room.  If anyone would like to help coordinate refreshments, please let Deacon James know.

Parish Life

We are in the midst of our annual Stewardship Season, Celebrating God’s Good Gifts! This is a time when we reflect on and celebrate the gifts that God has given us, and consider how we can offer thanksgiving back to God.

Flower Memorials: Each week flowers are placed on the altar for the 10:00 Sunday service in memory of loved ones who have died or in thanksgiving for a special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. The cost for the donation of the flowers is $30. Altar Flower Memorials are open for the following 5 dates: November 13, 2017, and in 2018 February 25, May 13, July 8, and August 12. Please know that the flower memorials automatically renew annually unless you request otherwise, scheduled for the date on the Sunday closest to the original request. To take advantage of this opportunity to honor or remember loved ones with a flower memorial, please notify Patty Wertz of the Altar Guild or Margaret Helminska in the Parish Office.

New Committee: Family Friendly Holy Apostles
