Worship

Morning Prayer is offered at 8:30AM on most Sunday mornings. No Morning Prayer on December 9th.

† Evening Family Worship will be held at 5:30 p.m. today, Dec. 9th.

Outreach

The East Parkside Citizens Association is celebrating their annual holiday party and has invited us to celebrate with them once again this year on Monday, December 10th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  We will meet at the church at 5 p.m. to travel together, or you can come to Christ Community Baptist Church, 1224 N 41st St., Philadelphia PA 19104. We usually bring side dishes and are also collecting turkeys as gifts to members of their community in need. There is a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall.  They are determining whom they will honor this year and will let us know how we can participate in that.

We are hosting he Connect by Night shelter program for the last 2 weeks of the month.  They will use a combination of the Church and Parish Hall for accommodations during that time, and we will do our usual lunch preparation. There is a sign-up list in the parish hall and online.

Children and Youth

Nursery childcare is available during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service for children ages 3 and younger in the Godly Play Room.

Sunday School: Children Preschool – 2nd grade and 3rd – 8th grade attend Sunday classes at 10:00 a.m., the same time as the church service starts; children join their parents in the church in time for communion. Classes are held on the 1st, 3rd, & 4th Sundays of the month. On 2nd Sundays children attend church with their parents, either the 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist service or the 5:30 p.m. Family Worship Service. When there is a 5th Sunday, children attend church with their parents, with some of the children taking part in leading the service.

The Holy Apostles Choir School begins its pilot program on February 5, 2019. If you have a potential student, apply today. Applications are available on-line or on the “connect” table. The Choir School will accept only 20 students for the pilot semester. Placement preference will be given to members of the Church of the Holy Apostles. Parish Life

TODAY: We are honored to be joined today by Bishop Daniel. A festive reception follows the 10:00 service to acknowledge his visitation and to honor our eight confirmands and one member received into our parish. Also during the reception, St. Nicholas will make a visit to the children.

Help Needed for Next Week’s Coffee Hour:  On Sunday, Dec. 16th, our children will be presenting the Christmas Pageant during the 10:00 service.  During the Coffee Hour following that service, we would like to thank them with a festive reception in which the entire parish can share.  If you can help in providing refreshments for this coffee hour, or have questions, please contact Judy Jervis at (610) 348-5529 or tuesbowler@outlook.com.

† Christmas Flower Memorials: Please submit the names of loved ones to be included on the  Christmas Flowers Memorial List to the Parish Office by Thursday, December 20th. The cost is $5.00 per name.

† If you enter the church building when the Little Friends Day Care is in session (7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.), and are anywhere other than in the church itself, please obtain a “Church Member” name tag from the Parish Office and wear it while you are here. This will show the teachers and children at the day care that you are a person who belongs here.. Any workers/maintenance people or visitors who come into the buildings also are required to wear a “Visitor” name tag to identify themselves to our own staff as well as to the day care staff and children.

Outreach

There is a sign-up list in the parish hall and online.

Help Needed for Festive Coffee Hours on December 9th and 16th:

On Sunday, Dec. 9th, during Coffee Hour we will be celebrating the visitation by Bishop Daniel, the confirmation of eight of our young people, and the reception on a new member to the parish — and as a special treat for our children, there will be  a visit by St. Nicholas. Will you help to provide special refreshments for that day? We will be serving tea and would like to have a variety of tea sandwiches, fruit (such as grapes and berries), and appetizers.

On Sunday, Dec. 16th, our children will be presenting the Christmas Pageant during the 10:00 service.  During the Coffee Hour following that service, we would like to thank them with a festive reception in which the entire parish can share.

DIOPA Men’s Fellowship Group

Dear Brothers in Christ,
We have started a men’s fellowship group within the DIOPA to encourage fellowship and spiritual development through good works. We have a literacy project scheduled for MLK Day of Service in Darby, PA. Our steering committee will meet on Friday December 7, at 7 am. We will enjoy a breakfast at IHOP in Ardmore, while we discuss supporting Fr. John Daniels and the young men of Church Farm School is this worthy endeavor. If any men from your church would like to learn more, please contact me. If there is interest in attending this meeting to plan the event, please join us for breakfast.

A Highland Christmas: A Benefit for St. James School

Volunteers are needed to help with “Pancakes with Santa” (see announcement above).  Opportunities to help: kitchen, set-up, clean-up, arts and crafts table, and bake sale table. Donations of baked goods and Christmas items to be sold are appreciated.  If you would like to help, please contact Drew Meiers, Judy Jervis, or place your name on the sign up list in the Parish Hall.

Turkey Trot: 5K Run or 1 Mile Walk 9:00 a.m. Thanksgiving, Nov. 22nd, to raise money for the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania . (Meet in front of St. Faith Church, Havertown.)  The fee is $20 or $10 for participants under 12. This event is held each year in memory of Matt Smyth who passed away from Testicular Cancer at age 23 and to remind men to check themselves.  Make your donations payable to Abramson Cancer Center and in the memo put “The Matt Smyth Fund”.

† Through today, Sunday, November 11th, the Sunday School will be collecting items to send to our troops overseas.  Items are listed on the posters that we have placed in the church hall, and a collection box is in the hallway.  Popular items include power bars, batteries, beef jerky and any candy that might be leftover from Halloween.  The Sunday School will make cards to send for the troops.  Please support our Treats for Troops drive!

Worship

† Tuesday, Nov. 6th at 6:30 p.m.: All Souls Memorial Holy Eucharist/Commemoration of All Faithful Departed. Please submit to the Parish Office the names of any deceased loved ones that you would like included in the prayers during that service.

† Wednesday, November 21st, at 7:00 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve service. Following the service there will be a Fireside Reception in the Memorial Room (please bring a beverage and appetizer to share). RSVP to Judy Jervis at (610) 348-5529 or tuesbowler@outlook.com if attending reception.

† Bishop Gutierrez will visit CHA on Sunday, December 9th for Confirmations, Receptions, and Reaffirmations.  If you are interested in any of those rites, or would just like to know more, talk to James+.

† Morning Prayer is offered at 8:30AM on Sunday mornings.  Morning Prayer according to the Book of Common Prayer is a beautiful and contemplative service, and a wonderful way to begin to Lord’s Day.  This does not affect 9AM choir practice or the 10AM service of Holy Eucharist.

† On every second Sunday of the month, healing prayer  will be offered immediately after communion during the 10:00 service.

Children and Youth 

† Nursery Childcare is available during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service for children ages 3 and younger in the Godly Play Room.

† Sunday School: Children Preschool – 2nd grade and 3rd – 8th grade attend Sunday classes at 10:00 a.m., the same time as the church service starts; children join their parents in the church in time for communion. Classes are held on the 1st, 3rd, & 4th Sundays of the month. On 2nd Sundays children attend church with their parents, either the 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist service or the 5:30 p.m. Family Worship Service. When there is a 5th Sunday, children attend church with their parents, with some of the children taking part in leading the service.

† Confirmation Class continues to be held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 5 p.m.

Parish Life

† Pancakes with Santa:  Saturday, Dec. 1st, 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Breakfast free for children 5 years old and younger. Baked goods will be for sale. (Donations of baked goods and Christmas items appreciated.) Bring your own camera for pictures with Santa!

† Through Sunday, November 11th, the Sunday School will be collecting items to send to our troops overseas.  Items are listed on the posters that we have placed in the church hall, and a collection box is in the hallway.  Popular items include power bars, batteries, beef jerky and any candy that might be leftover from Halloween.  The Sunday School will make cards to send for the troops.  Please support our Treats for Troops drive!

In order to include as many people as possible, James+ will facilitate several discussions about this book on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings.  But even if you cannot make it to the discussions you can still read this short, engaging, and  very readable book. Sign up in the parish hall if you want a copy and the church will make a bulk order.

St. Mark’s Armenian Catholic Church, 400 Haverford Road in Wynnewood, invites our congregation to their Annual Armenian Food Court on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10th and 11th, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s. Bring your family and friends to eat-in at the church hall or choose from the take-out menu. A limited number of raffle tickets for prizes are available in the CHA Parish Office for $1.00 each or a book of 12 for $10.  Additional tickets are available at St. Mark’s. The drawing for the winning tickets will be at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11th. Proceeds benefit St. Mark’s Armenian Catholic Church.

Holy Apostles & the Mediator: The Philadelphia parish that founded our parish in 1950 is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.  We’ve been invited to participate in several special events!

  • Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. A celebratory luncheon at the Hilton on City Avenue
  • Sunday, October 28th, 3:00 p.m.150th Anniversary Celebration Service at Holy Apostles and the Mediator, 260 S. 51st St, Philadelphia PA 1913

The Diocese Needs Our Help!

During the 2018 Diocesan Convention, the diocese hopes to fill 250 Blessing Bags to provide necessity items to those facing homelessness. A Wish List of items can be found at Amazon.com under Blessing/Dignity Bags. Items can be mailed to/dropped off at the Diocesan offices at 3717 Chestnut St., Ste. 300, Philadelphia PA 19104. For more info, please contact the Rev. Canon Toneh Smyth at tsmyth@diopa.org. Samples of needed items: socks, gloves, bandaids, water bottles, granola bars, raisins, & tissues. RECYCLING! We now have a recycling bin (clearly marked as such) located next to the large trash receptacle outside the kitchen door. All recyclable paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum should be placed in this bin rather than the trash.

If you visit the church during the week (and we hope you do!), please use the red double doors nearest the church offices.  Please take special care to lock doors behind you, and ensure that they latch properly. Doors that are not locked or completely shut are a very serious safety concern for Little Friends Daycare.  Thank you!

Outreach & Service

Darby Mission:   

We will be hosting our next Darby Mission meal on Tuesday, October 2nd.  We are looking for food preparers (main dish, mac and cheese, salad, dessert) and people to join in to  serve the meal. Meet at the church at 5 p.m. to drive together, or meet at 5:30 at the Darby Community Center (1021 Ridge Ave., Darby PA).  A sign-up sheet is posted in the parish hall or at the link below.

Outreach and Service

† Darby Mission:   The next date on which we will host a meal is Tuesday, October 2nd at 5pm. If you are available and interested in participating at Darby that day, please contact Joe Zorc. Meet at the church at 5 p.m. to drive together, or meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Darby Community Center (1021 Ridge Avenue, Darby PA). There is an online sign-up sheet (link below) as well as a sign-up sheet posted in the Parish Hall. The meal we cook will include hamburger provided by the Hughes family (no need for anyone else to purchase that ingredient). We are still deciding which dish to prepare.

† Flower Memorials: Each week flowers are placed on the altar for the 10:00 Sunday service in memory of loved ones who have died or in thanksgiving for a special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. The cost for the donation of the flowers is $30. Altar Flower Memorials are open for the following dates this beginning this year: Oct. 21st and Nov. 4th. Beginning in 2019. Feb. 17th and June 23rd are open. Please know that the flower memorials automatically renew annually unless you request otherwise, scheduled for the date on the Sunday closest to the original request. To take advantage of this opportunity to honor or remember loved ones with a flower memorial, please notify Patty Wertz of the Altar Guild.

† Fall Reading and Discussion: This fall, interested adults will read Ben Myers’s new book called The Apostles’ Creed: A Guide to the Ancient Catechism.  Want to deepen your understanding of the essentials of Christian faith, and how they are relevant to your life?  You need to read this excellent book! In order to include as many people as possible, James+ will facilitate several discussions about this book on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings.  But even if you cannot make it to the discussions you can still read this short, engaging, and very readable book. Sign up in the parish hall if you want a copy and the church will make a bulk order.
