Special Request: Aid for Asylum Seeking Refugees

We are looking for children’s clothes, sizes 5-9. There is also a need for backpacks or any kind of carry-on style luggage so that the refugees can carry their newly acquired items with them. Gently used as well as new items will be gratefully accepted!

You can help by:

  • purchasing items and dropping them off on the Outreach shelves in the narthex closet
  • purchasing items and shipping them directly to the church – please remember to mark your packages “Attention: Outreach”
  • making a donation to Outreach – marking “Refugees” in the memo line and it will be used to purchase specifically requested items for this project.

We will be collecting items for at least the next month, and will continue as long as busloads of folks in need are arriving. Items will be delivered to or picked up by Gladwyne Presbyterian on a weekly basis to insure getting the donated items to those in need as quickly as possible. Questions? Contact Katie

+ WINTER BOOK STUDY: A POST-COVID CATECHESIS by VICTOR LEE AUSTIN

Part 2 of our Winter Book Study will take place THIS SUNDAY, February 5, following the 10AM service. You can participate – whether or not you’ve read the book – in person in the Memorial Room or via Zoom using the Compline Zoom link. In Part 1 we had a great exchange of ideas and look forward to doing so again. You can view the video of the first discussion HERE.

+ DATE CORRECTION!!!!
The February newsletter has a rather glaring error regarding dates for the Shrove Tuesday Fellowship Event and Ash Wednesday services. On Page 9, it shows the dates as March 21 and March 22 when, of course, they are FEBRUARY 21 for Shrove Tuesday and FEBRUARY 22 for Ash Wednesday. Mea culpa!

+ FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
Pat Smyth, Patty Wertz, Judy Jervis, Pat Dyer and Cassie Woestman worked diligently to prepare the February edition of “The Apostle” for mailing. Look for it in your mailbox this week!

+ VISITOR BAGS
You may have seen these bags in the narthex. We hand them out to people who are new to Church of the Holy Apostles. But did you know what is in them? Each bag contains:

She will have them at church when possible, but you can order online for girl delivery at any time and we will drop them off! tinyurl.com/EmmaG2023 You can also order by texting Michelle Gallagher at 610-659-2109. Cookies are $5/box (Gluten Free $6/box).

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY: You can support the Girls Scouts and our Outreach Ministry by ordering a few extra boxes to be shared with the Darby Mission or as part of our Project Share lunch program! Your donated boxes can be placed on the shelves in the Outreach closet, in the CAN-estoga wagon in the office hallway, or give them to Cassie for safekeeping.

+ ATTIC REORGANIZATION PROJECT
On January 18 Annette Smith, Rosemary Hughes, Tom Forker and Katie Gentile met in the attic to assess what is being stored up there and what needs to go. Already the space has a more organized feel to it. There are a few items that may be of use to someone. Here is a link to a Google Photo Album with pictures and descriptions of the items available. Please contact Annette or Katie with any questions or to claim an item. The current plan is to have junk haulers come in late February/early March to remove all the extraneous items. Any items you want must be claimed – and preferably moved out – prior to February 12th.

+ STAY WARM WITH APOSTLE’S CUP!
You can purchase bags of regular-ground; regular-whole bean; and/or decaf-ground varieties. Each bag is $15, with $4 from each purchase going directly to the ministries of the Darby Mission. We have plenty of coffee available for purchase on Sundays, or any time the office is open (see Office Hours schedule below). You can also purchase Apostle’s Cup coffee direct from House Cup Coffee and have it shipped to your door!

+ MAY WE PRAY FOR YOU?

But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit

+ A NOTE FROM BISHOP DANIEL re: CELEBRATING THE REV. ABSALOM JONES
My Siblings in Christ,

The Rev. Absalom Jones was born into slavery and became the first Black priest ordained in The Episcopal Church – right here in our diocese. Next week, we celebrate the life of Absalom Jones with two events in our diocese.

On Sunday, February 5 at 10 a.m. the Presiding Bishop, the Very Rev. Michael Curry, will travel to The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas to join me for a service in Absalom’s honor.

On Saturday, February 11 at 9 a.m., we will celebrate Blessed Absalom with a service that includes preaching from the Rt. Rev. Shannon MacVean-Brown, bishop of the Diocese of Vermont, and NAACP Nominated Pine Forge Academy Choir. Lunch will be served so please register ahead of time. Acolytes from every church in the diocese are invited to process with their banners at this special diocesan-wide service. Please click here to let us know your acolytes will be participating.

In addition, I am requesting that Absalom’s propers be substituted for the normal readings on Sunday, 2/12. You can find them here. A group of people in the diocese also created this discussion guide to learn more about his life.

Please join me in commemorating this great and beloved son of our diocese.

+ WHAT ONCE WAS LOST HAS NOW BEEN FOUND
From a flea market in Allentown to an online auction, our bishop brought back a part of history. You can read the Episcopal News Service story here.
