Special Request: Aid for Asylum Seeking Refugees

We plan to continue to help meet the needs of refugee asylum seekers being bussed into our area.

We are looking for children’s clothes, sizes 5-9. There is also a need for backpacks or any kind of carry-on style luggage so that the refugees can carry their newly acquired items with them. Gently used as well as new items will be gratefully accepted!

Thanks to generous cash donations we were able to purchase $600 worth of warm clothing for children this week. Items were delivered to Gladwyne Presbyterian on Monday.

You can help by:

  • purchasing items and dropping them off on the Outreach shelves in the narthex closet
  • purchasing items and shipping them directly to the church – please remember to mark your packages “Attention: Outreach”
  • making a donation to Outreach – marking “Refugees” in the memo line and it will be used to purchase specifically requested items for this project.

We will be collecting items for at least the next month, and will continue as long as busloads of folks in need are arriving. Items will be delivered to or picked up by Gladwyne Presbyterian on a weekly basis to insure getting the donated items to those in need as quickly as possible. Questions? Contact Katie

+ CANDLEMAS – February 2, 2023
February 2 marks the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple, also known as the Feast of the Purification. It commemorates the presentation of Jesus and the purification of Mary in the Jerusalem Temple forty days after Jesus’ birth, in accordance with the requirements of Jewish law (Leviticus 12:2-8). According to the account of Luke 2:22-39, the presentation of Jesus was also the occasion of the meeting of Jesus with Simeon and Anna. Simeon’s prayer of blessing is the basis for the canticle Nunc dimittis (see BCP, p. 120), a part of the Evening Prayer and Compline services. The celebration came to include the lighting and blessing of candles which were carried in procession. This feast was known as “Candlemas.”

This year, we will be joining with our siblings in Christ at St George’s Episcopal Church, Ardmore at 1 W Ardmore Ave (corner of Darby Rd and Ardmore Ave) for a Candlemas service at 12 noon on Thursday, February 2nd. Bring any candles you want blessed and brown bag lunch. The service and shared lunch will be around an hour.

Note to Bible Study group
: Class will not be held on this date so that you are free to attend the service.

Emma Gallagher is selling Girl Scout Cookies now through March 12th! She will have them at church when possible, but you can order online for girl delivery at any time and we will drop them off! You can also order by texting Michelle Gallagher at 610-659-2109.

Cookies are $5 a box (Gluten Free $6). The cookie lineup is the same as last year – Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Shortbreads, Caramel Delights, Lemonades, Adventurefuls, ToastYays and Gluten Free Caramel Chocolate Chip. There is an online exclusive cookie this year that you can order for shipping – Raspberry Rally – like a Thin Mint, but raspberry instead of mint. We are working on ordering some to have on hand.

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY: You can support the Girls Scouts and our Outreach Ministry by ordering a few extra boxes to be shared with the Darby Mission or as part of our Project Share lunch program! Your donated boxes can be placed on the shelves in the Outreach closet, in the CAN-estoga in the office hallway, or give them to Cassie for safekeeping.

On Wednesday, January 18, Annette Smith, Rosemary Hughes, Tom Forker and Katie Gentile met in the attic to assess what is being stored up there and what needs to go. Already the space has a more organized feel to it. There are a few items that may be of use to someone. Here is a link to a Google Photo Album with pictures and descriptions of the items available. Please contact Annette or Katie with any questions. The current plan is to have junk haulers come in on February 20 to remove all the extraneous items.

Please mark your calendar now so you don’t miss this important event in our church year. A delicious luncheon will be served and we will be reviewing 2022, making plans for 2023 and voting on the 2023 operational budget and new vestry members. Child care will be available on site in the Godly Playroom.

We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting on January 29. The presentation during the meeting will include highlights from each ministry area, a summary of our finances, and time for questions and answers. The following documents are available for your review now:

Bring your questions with you to the Annual Meeting!

At the annual meeting we will be electing individuals to serve in the Vestry, filling vacancies created by those whose three-year term is coming to an end. Several individuals have nominated themselves already and we ask you to please pray for them as they prepare to take on this important role in church leadership:

  • Nancy Haas
  • Drew Meiers
  • Joe Zorc

1) Mark the date on your calendar so you don’t miss it!

2) We’ll move to the Parish Hall as soon as the 10am service has concluded. If you’re coming from home – please plan to arrive by 11:15am.

3) In-person attendance is very important. However, we are aware that for some folks, it’s just not possible to be on site. If you are unable to attend due to illness, mobility issues, or proximity, please contact the Parish office as soon as possible so we can see about making arrangements for you to join us via Zoom.

4) Begin now to pray for the candidates for Vestry for 2023 (listed above).

5) Pray for the current Vestry as they prepare their reports and plans for CHA for the coming year.

6) If you have not yet made your 2023 pledge – please prayerfully consider doing so before the meeting date. You can use the Giving area of Realm, get a pledge card from the narthex table, or contact the office to request that a pledge card be sent to you.

7) Use the card and envelope included in the newsletter to share your vision, wishes and dreams for ministry at Church of the Holy Apostles for 2023 and beyond. No thought is too outlandish. Don’t be held back by concerns of money or people or other resources. Dream BIG! You can make your suggestions anonymously if you prefer. Drop your card or note in the offering plate, in the senior warden’s mailbox in the office (top left of the mailbox wall), or drop it in the post. Or bring it to the meeting! Additional cards are available on the table in the narthex.

8) Prayerfully consider your role in the coming year. There are many ways to serve: * Greeter * Reader * Intercessor * Choir * Children’s Ministry * Youth Ministry * Fellowship * Good News/Evangelism * Tech * Event Photographer * Outreach * Vestry * Property * …or using any other talent you wish to share with your church family!

You can purchase bags of regular-ground; regular-whole bean; and/or decaf-ground varieties. Each bag is $15, with $4 from each purchase going directly to the ministries of the Darby Mission. We have plenty of coffee available for purchase on Sundays, or any time the office is open (see Office Hours schedule below). You can also purchase Apostle’s Cup coffee direct from House Cup Coffee and have it shipped to your door!

Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray.
