Welcome to Church of the Holy Apostles! The 10:00 a.m. service is Holy Eucharist, Rite II.  The celebrant and preacher is our rector, the Rev. James Stambaugh.

The Parish Annual Meeting will be held immediately following the service.

Wednesday, Morning Prayer – 9:00 a.m.* (No Holy Eucharist at 7:30 a.m. this week)

Thursday Morning Prayer – 9:00 a.m.

Friday Morning Prayer – 9:00 a.m.

Weekend Schedule

Holy Eucharist, Rite II: Every Sunday – 10:00 a.m.

Family Service: Every Second Sunday — 5:30 p.m.

Youth Group & Confirmation: Second & Fourth Sundays – 5:00 p.m.

Friday February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple (see Luke 2:22-38 for that story).  This is a major feast of Christ’s incarnation.  It is also traditionally known as Candlemas, because on this day a service is held in which candles are blessed for use in the home for the rest of the year.  James will be offering a service of Holy Eucharist, with candle blessing at 6PM on this day.  You’re welcome to bring your own candles to blessed. Some candles will be available.

Children & Youth

Nursery Childcare is available during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service for children ages 3 and younger in the Godly Play Room.

Sunday School classes (preschool – 2nd grade and 3rd – 8th grade) are held routinely on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Sundays of the month, be- ginning at 10:00 a.m., the same time as the church service starts; children join their parents in the church in time for communion. On 2nd Sundays children attend church with their parents, either the 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist service or the 5:30 p.m. Family Worship Service. When there is a 5th Sunday, children attend church with their parents, with some of the children taking part in leading the service.

In February, we will begin preparation for youth Confirmation!  Parents or youth who are interested in being confirmed by the bishop in Fall/Winter of 2018, please let James know of your interest.  James is looking at holding interactive confirmation classes for youth on Sunday nights, but would like feedback from participants about best times.

Outreach

Our next Darby Mission Meal will be the evening of Tuesday, February 6th. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the parish hall.

Rise Against Hunger: In celebration of its centennial, Church Farm School is holding a morning of service event, Rise Against Hunger, on Saturday, February 3rd from 9:30 – 12 with an optional lunch following.  Participants, who need to be 10 years old or above, will work with the students. This is a fun, lively, fast-paced activity of packing meals that will be sent to hungry people in this country and around the world. Their goal is to pack 100,000 meals that morning. If you are interested in participating, please let Nancy Haas know (nthaas@aol.com). The school needs the names of volunteers by Friday, January 26th.

Parish Life

As indicated above, our Parish Annual Meeting will be held today, immediately following the 10:00 a.m. service. Lunch will be provided.

On Saturday February 10 at 9:30AM, there is a diocesan wide celebration of Absalom Jones at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral.  Absalom Jones (1746-1818) was the first African-American priest in the Episcopal Church, ordained by the first bishop of Pennsylvania, William White.  Jones founded the African Church of St. Thomas in Overbrook (just 1.5 miles from us).  A group of us will leave Holy Apostles at 8:30AM on that morning.  Please let James know if you would like to attend.  Our parish banner will be carried as part of a grand procession.

There is now a door bell at the Parish Office entrance to the building. Please ring this if you do not have a key to enter.

Flower Memorials: Each week flowers are placed on the altar for the 10:00 Sunday service in memory of loved ones who have died or in thanksgiving for a special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. The cost for the donation of the flowers is $30. Altar Flower Memorials are open for the following dates beginning in 2018: June 25, August 12, October 21, and November 5. Please know that the flower memorials automatically renew annually unless you request otherwise, scheduled for the date on the Sunday closest to the original request. To take advantage of this opportunity to honor or remember loved ones with a flower memorial, please notify Patty Wertz of the Altar Guild.
